"the creative studio dentsu, teamed up with photographer linden gledhill to create this series of paint sculptures using
sound vibrations. the series was part of a campaign for canon’s pixma ink printer brand. the photographs and videos
begin by wrapping a membrane around a small speaker. ink drops were placed on this membrane and the speaker
was turned on. once it began to vibrate the ink begins to jump up and down. high-speed video cameras and still
cameras were used to capture this including circling around the sculptures to see them from all angles. experimenting
with different sounds and frequencies created the various pieces."

Distorted Perspective
A way to create illusions, fish eye views, etc. A fun way to work on compositions (Google Maps distorts the perspectives in their "street view" to provide the sense of being on the street rather than looking at a picture).

Try looking at something far away and have an object with straight edges next to your eye, not too obvious but the edges are a bit curved. That is a form of natural distortion

Electric Light:

I spend a lot of time running around with my point-and-shoot camera taking blurry photos of Providence at night--I don't view them as finished products, just color studies. I suppose security lighting makes the ordinary look strange, which is why I find it interesting.

On the topic of nature, I find Japanese gardens extremely beautiful and inspirational to look at. Just Google Imaging it will give you some great pictures, I will also bring in the books I have on Japanese Gardens next class if anyone is interested.

Something I really enjoy about these gardens as opposed to a more Western style (English gardens are the exception) is how natural and harmonious the layout is. A good counter example would be the French gardens where man's control over nature is very evident. I am not saying that one is better than the other, I simply enjoy seeing this more (at least visually, if not naturally) free form of a garden layout when being so used to a more western garden.

I'm sorry for the late blog post!! It slipped my mind this week :(

Do The Right Thing by/with Spike Lee is a great film to watch as a continuation of the feeling of street. Fairly different from the atmosphere of Downtown 81, but involves some very non-obvious similarities (might simply be connected in my mind because my friends and I would watch the two often when we first entered the art scene, but I am interested if this connection is there for those without this memory of the two).

The Spirit is also a great film... visually, the story line sucks, and the dialog can be seen as cheesy. It has a very different feel of the street, being more 20's/30's-ish with its predominantly black and white film, highlights of certain colors, style of clothing, etc.

Look up the film "Downtown 81"
it's on Instant Watch on Netflix, might also be up on YouTube in parts but not sure.

It takes a moment to get into it, but I personally love the atmosphere of the movie. It follows a character, played by Basquiat, through his day as a "struggling artist" in Downtown New York during the early 80's. It features several other artists including graffiti/street artists and many bands. You will notice the audio to the film is slightly, and occasionally very, out of sync with the film, this is due to the audio being lost in the process of making the film and the need for voice overs.

I hope everyone has the time to watch this movie! (and access to it!)
